It’s update time, so what’s with the video delay?

In all honesty, it’s primarily been 2 things.  The first has been my internet, which has been prone to random and frequent disconnects during the past couple of months.  It seems sorted now, but unfortunately i’m back on regular ADSL with it’s god awful upload speed.. least it’s stable though.

The second?  Borderlands was seriously unenjoyable for me to edit and upload.  Editing was a real bastard in places for some reason, then I rendered like 4 hours of it, only to find the sound was fucked and had to rerender again.  THEN the set was prone to random desync when YT reencoded the parts (i’ve since found YT doesn’t like the way I was autosplitting videos).  Combine that with wobbly uploading, and the whole thing being an exercise in sheer frustration, and it just made me just say fuck it for the time being (until I felt like editing/uploading again).

It’s been a while now though, almost 2 months I think.

I’ve recorded a fair amount during that time however.. not days worth of footage, but certainly more than enough (I covered what stuff in a previous post, though there is a couple of new additions).

Either way, i’ll be starting uploading again soon enough.  I’ve gotta finish some stuff with the website and write a couple more articles, then i’ll turn my attention to getting Borderlands finished up.

After that, there’ll probably be a delay while I sort out the new HTSF format.

If you were curious as to what I meant by that, then allow me to draw you a ‘diagram’ of the current HTSF format:

(part 1) FUNNYISH CLIP FROM LATER IN THE SET — HTSF INTRO — START OF SET

(all other parts) JUST FOOTAGE FROM THE RELEVENT PART

The new format will go something like:

(part1) FUNNYISH CLIP FROM LATER IN THE SET — HTSF INTRO — AN INTRODUCTION TO THE GAME — TRANSITION — START OF SET — END OF PART OUTRO

(all other parts) JUST FOOTAGE FROM THE RELEVENT PART — END OF PART OUTRO

It’ll be the first part taking the majority of the changes, but i’ll be returning to the outro method ala HTSF of yesteryear, mainly due to that i’ll have to manually split my own parts now, so I may as well.

So there ya go dudes!  Bit of info on the HTSF drought (which’ll be ending soon enough) and the refined format.

Sorry to hear about all the problems with Borderlands. Good luck getting it all sorted.

Not sure about the opinions of most of your viewers, but I’ve been watching the MGS HTSF and I don’t like the outros on each part. I’m not sure if a different outro would work better, but I kind of like the way they’re split now. I definitely like the idea of a game intro, though; that’d be a nice addition.

I kind of agree. If you’re watching the vids as you upload them, having an outro to each part is fine. It gives you a little bit of closure that a simple pause doesn’t, which is good when you have to wait for the rest of the set to finish processing. However, if an HTSF has been up for a while, you’re more likely to watch it using a playlist. In that case, an outro between each part breaks up the viewing experience unnecessarily.

Oh, but it’s great to hear new vids are coming! After watching a ton of your old videos throughout the Christmas holidays, I was starting to run dry :P

hmm, taken onboard the stuff about outros.. i’ll have a rethink.

I was talking to hum just a couple days ago on steam and she left the chat abruptly a couple times due to yall’s internet going out I believe, so I feel ya there xD. I’ve got cable internet and while it does go out on occasion it’s pretty stable, though when it does go down it’s usually for a pretty decent length of time (read: at least an hour).

Glad you seem to have it worked out at least and can’t wait to see you start uploading again ;)

Hmmm, not so sure about Outros. I wouldn´t mind a subtle one, like a one second fade-out or something like that, but the old ones were sometimes a bit misplaced. In some cases they actually made me jump or ruined an epic speech, but if done correctly they can improve the viewer´s experience. Ultimately it´s up to you, OTG.

Yeah, it’s hard to say how the outros will work, but overall I’d have to say I’m leaning toward a “no”. I’ve gotten very used to the newer format and I feel it works best. At the very least, try it for one set and see how it works out. If almost nobody likes it, I’d say you should think of a new option.

looking forward to any new stuff that you put out =] right now im just scraping everything i can find of justintv haha. no rush as always tho
as for the new format, whatever floats your boat dude. if its easier for you to do that, then fair dues.

Sorry to hear about your internet and editing Borderlands sounds like a real pain. As for outros i hate outros with a burning passion…ok thats a bit much but i really don’t like them an outro would work at the end of a whole set.

Can’t wait for the new videos..

To give my two cents, I don’t think outros to each video are necessary. I’m not too familiar with the editing process but I can only imagine it would add to the time spent preparing the videos to be uploaded.

Oh teh noes, the outros are back. I honestly dreaded the outro back in the old htsf days, well not really an outro, more of a “END OF PART” quote at the end. But godamn it really was a break in transition from one video to the next. I think people might grow weary of an outro after every video and not all would agree with such a choice. But it is your videos and your choice and it is indeed only my opinion.

I honestly had no idea people disliked the outros, so the comments here have been most informative.

From an editors point of view, outros add a little something special to close up a video. It seems from a viewers point of view though, they break the flow, even if it’s just for a few seconds.

I’ve said a few times before, that i’ve never actually sat down and watched a full HTSF (except for the odd one that was only 2ish parts long), so the dropping of outros was primarily down to utilizing automatic video splitters, as opposed to knowing there was any problem with them.

Well, it saves me some time (though I enjoy it) making an outro sequence, and the people seem somewhat united against them.

So no outros :] cheers for the feedback lads.

So you were gonna go back to THE OLD OLD OLD format where you had quick screen with info on the first set, and a 2 second end of part screen. I don’t really mind them. What you should do is overlap the parts a bit. It seems as if the video cuts in the middle of somthing happening or you saying something so if the last 2-3 seconds overlap with the first 2-3 seconds of the next vid it avoids this.

I’ve seen a couple people do things like how Church said. Personally that kind of style of doing it tends to take me by surprise a bit, cause the next video actually picks up a few seconds before the last one ends, but it’s a decent way of doing things I guess especially if you cut yourself off alot at the end of a part. I’m paying more attention to where I cut the end of a part. At first I’d just cut it at whatever point I exceed 10 minutes but now I try to make sure I’m not in the middle of saying something. However, I don’t really mind ending a video “in the middle of something” as long as it’s not cutting anything off (speech in a cutscene, etc.). To me it adds a bit of a cliffhanger effect to the video and makes people wanna watch the next part that much more to see how this “something” gets resolved, but that’s just me :P

well damn. i liked the outros. plus the fact that, when used, it usually doesn’t cut you off mid sentence

lol it does just that though, outros cut him off mid-sentence. @kingmajin -

Mad props to OTG on his listening-to-feedback skills. Outros never really bothered me in a “f**king outros!” kind of way but I do agree they seem unnecessary. Would seem like wasted effort when there is a bit of charm about going straight from moment to moment with no pause beyond a swirly loading circle.

I know you probably have fun doing an outro though, so maybe it could come after the old “See ya dudes.” at the end of a set.

Actually that’s not such a big issue at all.

I’ve been doing it since i started and have yet have someone ask me if I could stop it.
Plus it makes editing so much quicker:
+ Add Video footage
+ Add Audio file
+ Sync up the audio/video
+ Run automatic regions script to make regions every 11min
+ Add in the region filenames
+ run a batchrender that uses region filenames

I say that the benefits of not doing it majorly outweigh the benefits of adding them.

An end of set outro after the “See ya dudes” might work though. I think the majority of your viewers, however, will just be glad that more videos are up
